Emancipation Celebration under the distinguished patronage of MPP Yasir Naqyi. The theme The Torch Has Arrived. Guest Speaker: Pastor R. J. McEwan (Pastor, Rhema Christian Ministries Ottawa). Display of arts and historical documentation; musical renditions; African drumming and special guest appearances. Refreshments will be served. (Goodwill offering appreciated).
AUGUST 1 IS EMANCIPATION DAY IN ONTARIO
Emancipation Day is celebrated in various locations throughout the Americas on various dates in observation of the emancipation of slaves of African origin. Efforts by the Ontario Black History Society to have August 1st commemorated annually by the Province of Ontario as Emancipation Day have been successful. The bill was passed in early December, 2008. August 1, 1834 is the date when the British Imperial Act of 1833 An Act for the Abolition of Slavery throughout the British Colonies went into effect.
