Ottawa Documentary Première – "Black in Ottawa", by Ottawa filmmakers Patrice James and Orpheus Morgan. This thought-provoking documentary is the first to explore the struggles, triumphs and interactions of Ottawa’s various black communities while also examining the relationships between these groups and 'mainstream society'. After the film, stick around for some great eats and dance to some funky rhythms as  DJ Lance Baptiste drops the beat?! Cathedral Arts presentation marking the 175th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. The Act to Abolish Slavery in the British Empire was the result of a campaign by abolitionists worldwide, and efforts in the British Parliament by an alliance of Evangelical Anglicans and Quakers led by MP William Wilberforce. Upper Canada (Ontario) was the first jurisdiction in the Empire to take steps to abolish slavery with the passage of the Anti-Slavery Act of 1793 under Governor John Graves Simcoe. Freedom 175 is a musical celebration of Canadian heroes who worked for abolition. Hosted by CTV anchorwoman Marci Ien, this special showcase will portray their stories through song, dance and spoken word set to the rhythm of the drum. Performers include: Stratford actor Walter Borden, Actor/producer Anthony Sherwood, People’s Gospel Choir of Montreal, Ottawa “Blues Lady” Maria Hawkins, Spoken Word Artist Anthony Bansfield, The Heru Drummers, Poet Stachen Frederick and Christ Church Cathedral Girls’ Choir.
