In collaboration with the North-South Development Project, Black History Ottawa launched its youth membership program titled ‘Railroad to Success’ this spring. As a program meant to assist and support youth ages 14 and up, many were excited to join in and learn about topics ranging from financial literacy to career planning and much more.
The first cohort consisted of discussions surrounding police interaction and awareness training and resume creation. Essentially it gave young Black and Minority youth the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills that they would not gain elsewhere. All participants took away valuable information from this program. Roughly 90% of the participants stated that they benefited from this mentorship program and would recommend it to their peers.
This mentorship program is planned to run for another cycle. If interested, sign up for Black History Ottawa’s newsletter which will publish all upcoming events and dates to mark down in your calendars.
