The Coloured Hockey League of the Maritimes

The Coloured Hockey League of Maritimes (CHLM) operated from 1895 to 1930. Composed of the sons and grandsons of American slaves, this league was first formed with the intention of attracting more men to church while strengthening the religious beliefs of those in the community and was typically held after service.

Conceived in 1895 by James Robinson Johnston, Pastor James Borden, James A.R. Kinney and Henry Sylvester Williams, the league to empower the Black community in spite of the many challenges they faced. It primarily consisted of three teams: the Truro Victorias, Halifax All-Stars and the Africville Sea-Sides. Over time, the league grew and included teams from beyond Halifax. As time went on, the physical and game style changed as well. From what was once a game that was played by the rules inspired by the Holy Bible the game transformed into an orderly system playing under standardized hockey rules.

Not only did this Hockey league open doors for current Black Hockey players but it also served to dispel myths about the sport abilities of Black men and women. With their fast paced physical play and goaltending style, these players made an undeniable contribution to the sport hockey.

Today, a commemorative stamp is available for viewing in honour of the league. It was released by Canada Post in January 2020 and features an image of all-black hockey team. The stamp states “Coloured Hockey Championship” while highlighting the names of some of the teams: Jubilees, Stanleys, Eurekas, Sea-Sides, Rangers, Royals and Moss Backs.
